Tonic

Back then, the word tonic is referred to as any beverage which is used to cure diseases or improve health. This is the reason why the beverage, now popularly known as tonic in tonic water, is called that because it is made of quinine, a substance known for its malaria preventing properties.

Tonic, and its use in tonic water, is attributed to India. It was in India when soldiers first used quinine, sugar and water as a malaria preventing drink. Tonic has long since then been used for its health properties and has even found following among gin drinkers who use tonic as part of the classic gin and tonic drink.

Tonic is now being used in tonic water, tonic soda and even gin tonic. Tonic is enjoyed by the world over in different forms, either as an addition to other beverages, or by itself. It has evolved from being the bitter health drink it once was to being the sweetened tonic we now know it to be.

Be it for medicinal purposes or for refreshment, tonic is patronized and well received in the world. Its use and addition for hard drinks and soft drinks as well as other forms of refreshments suggest that tonic will stay in popular culture because of its diverse use.
